When an athlete makes a mistake, one of the first questions the public asks is what effect will it have on the kids? I was a kid of the Mark McGwire era, in the worst way. I owned a number 25 jersey, I cut out newspaper clips every time he hit a home run in September, and I painted a red beard on my face in October to be Big Mac for Halloween. Aside from personal acquaintances and family, this news hits me hardest because McGwire was my hero, he was everything I wanted to be and everything I looked up to.

We can let it go, now, watch his progress as a hitting coach, and feel satisfied that he is kept out of the Hall of Fame for at least many years to come.
Still, the game remains, with a continuing stream of new players to thrill and disappoint us. The game itself is wonderful, and the heroes and rogues who play it have also provided the depth and texture for long conversations across history. Certainly, as they are rebuilt, the Nats are starting fresh. Even though the team now has a suspected steroids user among them (Ivan Rodriguez), he certainly isn't using them now, if he ever did.
Let McGwire's admission bring closure to your mourning, and allow the whole affair be another aspect of life that you see more clearly, but with less wonder, than you did as a kid. Then just allow yourself to enjoy the game as much as you possibly can.
