They Said It- Ichiro Suzuki E-mail

ichiro3I usually refrain from writing about non-Nationals news on here, but this just had to be shared. Ichiro said this to the New York Times regarding infield singles:

"Chicks who dig home runs aren't the ones who appeal to me. I think there's sexiness in infield hits because they require technique. I'd rather impress the chicks with my technique than with my brute strength. Then, every now and then, just to show I can do that, too, I might flirt a little by hitting one out."

I have no analysis on the sexiness of either a home run or a infield hit, but I must say that to me home runs are more impressive. Infield hits almost always require one of two things. 1) A fielder to either be to slow or in poor position to get to a ball and 2) luck in terms of placement. Home runs are pure grit, talent, and skill. It's hard to accidently hit a bomb.

No one hits nearly 300 on luck and bad defense. It takes skill. I'm not sure what, speed, reading the ball, bat control? But its a real skill.

Baseball does not like outfield players who hit 300 doing singles. Still, there is plenty of skill in batting 300, no matter how you get there

No argument it's hard to hit .300, but that's not the same thing as hitting infield singles.

My guess is that he hits some to the outfield, since he currently has a .359 average.
